Panguitch Loop (400 km)

Monday, June 8th, 2015, starting at 02:30*
Required equipment inspection & final registration, is between 16:00–15:30 hours (4–5:30 p.m.) at our host motel on Sunday the 7th. This route is combined with the Red Rock 600 & 1000K events.

Online Map  A detailed cue sheet and brevet card will be provided at check in. Do NOT rely on the online cue sheet as it may not be up to date. A PDF version can be provided in advance upon request.

Introduction  This is a variation of Lonnie Wolff’s Hurricane 400K offered a few years ago, except we are combing it with the Red Rock Randonnée series, and we are starting at a different town.

It covers varied terrain in both Utah and Arizona. There are no grades over about 9 or 10% on this route, but there are several long, continuous climbs. There are long sections, up to 50 miles with no water and even longer distances between services.

The cue sheet has detailed information on services including the hours of most c-stores. Water spigots are various parks or c-stores are also identified, as riding a  such distances may involve traveling at off hours to complete this ride.

Route Stats 404.7 km (251.4 miles) with 11,397 feet of cumulative elevation gain (Ride with GPS figure). Time limit: approx. 27 hours. The starting elevation is 4,915 feet. The highest elevation gained is 7,903 feet at mile 162. The low point is in Hurricane Utah at 3,213 feet, early in day. RUSA route # 1678.

Etc., Etc., Etc.

Start & Finish Kanab Utah (in the southern-most part of Utah, near the Arizona border). There are many motels like the less expensive options below (some of which close in the off season):

  • Aikens Lodge at 79 West Center St, tel 435-644-2625 or 1-877-644-2105. This one is very close to the start & has perhaps the best rates, but has no in-room coffee makers or microwaves! They do have a “family style” suite with several bedrooms & one bathroom for big savings.
  • Redrock Country Inn, 330 S 100 E, tel 435-644-8774. This is very close to the only 24/7 c-store in town, but is a little more expensive than Aikens.
  • Parry Lodge Motor Hotel, 89 East Center St, tel 435-644-2601 — OUR HOST MOTEL.
  • Day’s Inn, 296 W 100 N, tel 435-644-2562
  • Royal Inn & Suites, 386 E 300 S. Mixed reviews but very inexpensive.
  • Other choices, further (east) from the start point, include a Holiday Inn and Comfort Inn.

There are no 24-hour restaurants in Kanab, only two c-stores. Most of the fast-food places close at 10 or 11 p.m. McDonald’s opens the latest til about 10 or 11, located at 159 E 300 S. The Silver Eagle c-store at 289 S 100 E (at the main junction in town) and the 7-11 (east side, better food selection) are open 24/7.

Registration Preegistration is required so I have time to prepare the personalized brevet cards & cue sheets. You are responsible to make your own motel reservations—overnight accommodations are not included in the registration fee. This event will be limited to only perhaps a dozen riders. For the permanent, you must be a  RUSA member, but for the regular brevet no membership in a club is required.

This will be a self-supported brevet. The RBA (Richard) will be riding a 1000K that day with the whole group as a participant. This means you will be getting your supply of fluids and extra food at convenience stores or cafes along the route. There is no SAG. In the event of any catastrophic problems, we recommend that you have a back up plan (a local friend that you might call for assistance). If you do have a friend or spouse that can help drive part of the route, please let me know — such help is always welcome. Such help needs to be neutral roving support — that is equal assistance for all riders.
We will have some goodies at the start. If you wish to grab some nutrition, come early so you can get it packed into your carrying system for this brevet. We most likely will items like Perpeteum, Cytomax (w/ Zip Locs so you can carry it with you), bananas, Clif Shot Roks, Honey Stingers, fig newtons etc. I will also carry these items with me as I provide limited support on the route.

If you have to abandon the brevet, please call or text the support crew, IF we have such a person.

Reminders This is primarily a self-supported event, so bring cash for stops at various convenience stores and for entrance fees into the national parks. Also, please have a pen in your bag as this route requires answering several “Informational Checkpoint” questions.

Lighting This route requires lighting. That includes a front light, a rear tail red light, a reflective vest or sash and reflective ankle bands. Be advised to bring back ups for each light too. There will be an inspection at the start line to insure you have everything (if you arrive at the finish after dark without appropriate lighting and clothing you will be DQed— see our rules page for more info on this topic).

Sun Data (approx.) Civil twilight/sunrise: 5:26/5:59 a.m. Sunset/civil twilight: 8:57/9:30 p.m.

If You Are Late Please call me so I can arrange to leave you a cue sheet and brevet card. You can start up to an hour after the official start time, but subsequent checkpoint cut-off times will remain the same, as if you had started with everyone else. If you know in advance, or wake up in the morning and decide not to ride, please let me know so I won’t worry about you at the start.

Sanctioning This is an ACP-sanctioned bevet. See our “What is a Brevet?” page for more information on sanctioning.

*Why the super-early start? At mile 50, the highway crosses into Utah and the shoulder diminishes down to nothing. Consequently, we want to get everyone through this section before the daytime traffic hits. An early start will also enable most riders to arrive at the overnight in Panguitch before our designated restaurant closes for the evening (midnight). There are no 24/7 restaurants at our overnight stops, only a few c-stores that are open all night.
