Gnarly Nebo 200 — RWGPS Link — RUSA-sanctioned 200km Brevet

202.5 km (126 miles), with 6,809 feet of cumulative elevation gain. Time limit: ~ 13:30. RUSA route # 1311.

Introduction These routes make one of the more notable hill climbs in Utah — up and over the Mount Nebo Loop road (a “US Scenic” highway). Both routes make the climb up and down to Nephi. Additionally, the brevet travels along three of my favorite cycling landmarks in this area of the state: Goshen Canyon, around West Mountain along the southern shores of Utah Lake. Nearly all of the climbing is on the first half of the ride, when you are most fresh and the temperatures are co0ler. Also there should be less traffic on the switchbacks of the Nebo loop road in the early hours of the day.

Start & Finish Location Smith’s 632 S 100 W in Payson (park on the north side of the building).

Directions Take exit 250 off I-15 and head south on Main St.

Registration If possible, please register 48 hours in advance so I have time to prepare the personalized brevet cards and cue sheets. The administration and insurance fee is $5.00, except for “day of” registration, which is $10.00.

If You Are Late Please call me so I can arrange to leave you a cue sheet and brevet card. You can start up to an hour after the official start time, but subsequent checkpoint cut-off times will remain the same, as if you had started with everyone else. If you know in advance, or wake up Saturday morning and decide not to ride, please let me know so I won’t worry about you at the start.

Support This is a “self-supported” brevet. This means  you will resupply at convenience stores, forest service recreation areas or cafes along the route. There will be no SAG support and riders must apply principles of self-reliance. I will be at the start to handle the brevet cards, but since I will be riding with the group, I cannot provide support during this ride.

I will have some goodies at the start line (some of which are provided free from our sponsors and some I will purchase). If you wish to grab some nutrition, come early so you can get it packed into your carrying system for this brevet. I will have nutrition such as Perpeteum, Cytomax, bananas, Clif Shot Roks, Honey Stingers, fig newtons etc.

Warning  There is water about half way up the Nebo Loop road, located at the first Payson Lakes turnoff (the water is only 50 yds off the road & will is noted on the cue sheet). Topping off yourself AND your bottles is highly recommended as there is no other water until the other side at the Nephi checkpoint.

If you have to abandon the brevet, please call or text me, so I don’t wait for you at the finish.

Sanctioning This event is not a ACP-sanctioned brevet, but will be a sanctioned RUSA event. See our “What is a Brevet?” page for more information on sanctioning.

Reminders Much of this route is a self-supported event, so bring cash for stops at various convenience stores. Also bring a pen in your bag as this route requires answering “Information Checkpoint” questions.

Cue Sheet A detailed cue sheet and brevet card will be provided at check in. The online route is accurate, but do NOT rely on the online cue sheet as it is automatically generated and may have flaws. If you wish to preview the cue sheet, a PDF version can be e-mailed to any registered rider.
