Ride with GPS Link

A detailed cue sheet and brevet card will be provided at check in. Do NOT rely on the online cue sheet as it may not be accurate. If you wish to preview the cue sheet, a PDF version can be e-mailed to you upon request, or one will be sent out to everyone on the Google E-Mail Group, about a week before the event date.

Introduction This loop route starts in Saratoga Springs, which half way between Salt Lake City and Provo, on the NW corner of Utah Lake. The route travels west into the Great Basin or “west desert” of Utah. It travels nearby, or on the Pony Express trail and past the Camp Floyd/Stagecoach Inn State Park in Fairfield. It then climbs up to Eureka and makes a fast descent into Utah Valley before taking some 35 miles of rollers, along the west side of Utah Lake back to the start. On this same day will be an out-and-back 130km Populaire that shares the same route, so riders can go together for part of the morning.

Date & Time Saturday, May 7th, 2016. Sign in at 8:30 and a mass start at 9:00 a.m. with brief announcements right beforehand. If you did not preregister, please come early and pay with a check (or exact change in cash). Since I will also be riding with the group, I cannot wait for late comers (I will leave your brevet card on my windshield if you notify me). This event will be held rain or shine.

Stats 200.4 km (124.5 miles) with 4,410 feet of cumulative elevation gain. Time limit: 13:30 (or by 10:30 p.m.). RUSA route # 1515.

A detailed cue sheet and brevet card will be provided at check in. Do NOT rely on the online cue sheet as it may not be accurate. A PDF version will be provided in advance upon request.

Start & Finish Location Walmart, 136 UT-73 in Saratoga Springs (NW corner of SR-68 [Redwood Rd] & SR-73).

From the SLC, take Redwood Rd south. From Provo or southern Utah, travel north on I-15 and take exit 278 onto SR-145/Pioneer Crossing & go west. Then right onto SR-68/Redwood Rd & proceed north about a mile.

Mount Nebo with Mona Reservoir in the foreground (just north of Nephi).

Registration If possible, please register 48 hours in advance so I have time to prepare the personalized brevet cards and cue sheets. The administration and insurance fee is $5.00.

Support This is a “self-supported” brevet. This means you will resupply at convenience stores or cafes along the route. There will be no SAG support and riders must apply principles of self-reliance. I will be at the start to handle the brevet cards, but since I will be riding with the group, so I cannot provide support during this ride.

If any of you have a friend or spouse that can help drive part of the route, please let me know. If they do provide support, it needs to neutral — that is equal support for all riders.

If you have to abandon the brevet, please call or text me, so I don’t wait for you at the finish.

Warnings Please note that are two long sections on this route where there are no services. From the start to Vernon is 40 miles (there is water at the state park at mile 15 should you wish to top off). Be advised to carry adequate fluids for these sections.

Reminders This is a self-supported event, so bring cash for stops at various convenience stores. Also have a pen in your bag as this route requires answering an “Informational Checkpoint” question. Since I will be riding with the group, do not arrive late as I cannot wait for late comers!

Lighting No lighting should be required at the start. Although the last 30 miles of this route are on a rural road, it is still not safe to ride at night without lighting (if you arrive at the finish after dark without appropriate lighting and clothing you will may be DQed— see our rules page for more info on this topic).

If You Are Late Please call me so I can arrange to leave you a cue sheet and brevet card (most likely I will just leave it on the windshield of my car). You can start up to an hour after the official start time, but subsequent checkpoint cut-off times will remain the same, as if you had started with everyone else. If you know in advance, or wake up Saturday morning and decide not to ride, please let me know so I won’t worry about you at the start. I will not be checking e-mail on Saturday, so please call or text me.

Sanctioning This is an ACP sanctioned event. See our “What is a Brevet?” page for more information on sanctioning.
