This year’s Willard Bay & Beyond 200K, due to an unseasonably warm spring, was a blue bird day for cycling. The low temp was about 55F (at 9 a.m.) rising to the upper 70s during the day. There was little wind to contend with. 16 riders participated, which is a new record for Salt Lake Randonneurs. It was nice to have riders from Idaho Falls and Wyoming join us.

Many were struggling to keep up with Michelle McClenahan, and the young legs of Jason Hawkins. Michelle was on a TT bike as she is training for a late season Ironman. Several riders blended into pacelines with the those doing the BBC century ride. Others cruised at a more casual rate, taking more reasonably breaks at the various convenience stores along the route.

There was only one reported flat and we had 100% finishing rate.

I’m thinking of adding a few more 200Ks to this season (RUSA, not ACP certified). What about these?

June 16 (Sat.): Ultimate ULCER. A 200K that starts in Nephi and makes a loop around Utah Lake. This route has little climbing. It is the exact same route as the last third of the 600K, so theoretically, with careful scheduling, you could ride with the 600Ks folks as they finish up.

August 11 (Sat.): Gnarly Nebo. A new 200K brevet (tentative) with lots of climbing over the Nebo Loop, plus an out and back up Hobble Creek Canyon.

Sept. 29th or October 13 (Sat.): Moab Double Whammy 200K (tentative)

Give me your thoughts. No feedback, no scheduling!

~ Richard

I have received a few e-mails regarding this weekends events. Here’s the scoop:

On that day and location there will be two events that depart at 9 a.m.:
1. A 200K (125 mile) brevet. Pre-registration is appreciated and will save you $5.00.
2. A shorter BCC ride(s), which I believe is about 90 miles and possibly a 60 or 70 mile option. Pre-registration for this event is not required.
I only manage the brevets. Don Williams with BCC coordinates the many other BCC “rides.”
Last year there was about 40+ riders doing the shorter ride. They stop every 25 or 30 miles at convenience stores to top off supplies. At the turn-around spot they may spend a little more time hanging out (proceed to the back of the Flying J).
At this point we have 12 signed up for the brevet. If you choose the brevet and wish to get “credit” and a posting on the SLR site, you MUST make mandatory stops at a few of the convenience stores and get a receipt (same stores as the 90-mile guys will stop, except we go further past their final stop to get the needed miles). The receipts prove that you didn’t short cut the route and actually made it to the ending turnaround spot. Because of that requirement, brevet riders (called randonneurs) can tend to take a little longer.
The registration link is on this page. $5.00 using VISA, MC, Discover or PayPal or $10 “at the door.”
Further details on the route and where to meet are found here.
Cheers,
Richard Stum, Regional Brevet Administrator

P.S.

~ I will be out of the office most of the day Friday (in Provo) and consequently cannot respond to e-mail in a timely fashion, if at all. I will check for last minute registrations Friday night however.

~ There are no restrooms at the start, so those of you traveling from outside the area, consider “taking care of business” at a c-store beforehand. I will park on the far (east) side of the school parking lot. As posted on the main page for this event, I will have plenty of powdered Perpeteum & ZipLocs for those that want to pre-mix or pack some along. Allow time before the start time to sort out such food details.

~ Since I will be riding with the group, I cannot stick around for late arrivals. If that happens, I will leave your brevet cards on the windshield of my vehicle (look for the beat-up green 4Runner with the “Randonneurs USA” magnet on the side).

~ I will leave a window slightly open, so those that beat me home, at the end of the ride, can leave me their SIGNED brevet cards, along with the receipts.

Last year, I had a few requests to sponsor a mid-season 200K brevet. Typically, most 200Ks are offered early in the season, so as to allow time to finish a whole series, but there are those that only want to do 200 or 300s.
On May 5th at 6:30 a.m. we have scheduled the 300K Back Roads of the West Desert (map link: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/663487)
On the same day, starting at 7:30 or 8:00 a.m., I could possibly offer the West Desert Dash 200K as a brevet (I would need some lead time to get it approved as it is currently only certified as a permanent). It starts at the same location as the 300K and both have similar routes. But I would need an assistant to be at the start to hand out brevet cards as I planned on riding the 300K.
Another option is to offer this route (ride around Utah Lake) as a brevet on Saturday, June the 16th. The 600K riders will be doing this exact same route as their final 200K, starting between 1 am to about 8am, also on Saturday, so their might be some possibilities of overlap and riding together. I willl not be riding the 600 that day and could possibly be around to “start” the 200K riders.
But once again, this is not approved as a brevet and I need time to do so.
Let me know if this is of interest.
Cheers,
Richard Stum, RBA

RUSA has launched two new awards which members should find highly challenging and motivating.

The RUSA Cup is earned by completing all the types of RUSA events, and riding 5000km in total RUSA events, within two years. You must complete a 200k, 300k, 400k, 600k, and 1000k brevet, a 1200k-or-longer grand randonnée, a RUSA team event (Flèche, Arrow, or Dart), and a Populaire. Permanents and foreign events (such as PBP) don’t count. The award is retroactive – you may use past events.

The RUSA American Explorer is earned by completing RUSA-sanctioned rides (including permanents) in different US states and territories. Initial recognition is achieved at the 10-state level and additional states are earned as you explore the nation. This award is also retroactive.

Members can find these announcements on the Announcements page, and drill down from there to award details and application pages. Both of these are “meaty” awards which we hope will spur new, multi-year goals for our members, and encourage riding events of different types and in new places.

A big thanks to Ken Knutson (American Explorer administrator), Greg Olmstead (RUSA Cup administrator), Jennifer Wise (RUSA Store), James Kuehn (Web and database), and in addition, formative ideas from Dan Driscoll and Bill Olsen.
