ACP-sanctioned time limit: 13:30, that is finish by 21:30 (9:30 p.m.), assuming a 08:00 start. RUSA brevet # 1673.

Start Time Check will be at 7:30 and a group departure time promptly at 8:00. The check-in closes five minutes before the start. If you did not preregister, please come early and pay with a check (or exact change in cash). Since the RBA will also be riding with the group, he cannot wait for late comers (he will leave your brevet card on the windshield if you notify him in time). This event will be held rain or shine.

Introduction This a variation of Lonnie Wolff’s (former RBA in Cedar City, Utah) classic ride which goes up into Zion National Park. It goes up Zion Canyon to the end of the road inside the park, & then back down. The 200K route then heads to the southern end of St. George. Because these routes enter a national park, you must pay an entrance fee. In most cases, several riders can get in on one person’s season or senior pass at the same time. Zion Canyon is closed to most cars, but shuttle buses run on the road. Bicycles are required to pull over to allow shuttle buses to pass. Cyclists are limited to groups of 6 bikes or less, so please split up prior to entering the park.

Start & Finish Location Lin’s Market @ 1120 W State St in Hurricane. Take exit 16 off I-15 and head east on SR-9 for approx. 8 miles. It is on the NE corner of 1150 W & SR-9. Park on the SW corner of the lot.

Cue Sheet A detailed cue sheet and brevet card will be provided at check in. If you wish to preview the cue sheet, a PDF version can be e-mailed to you upon request, or one will be sent out to everyone on the Google E-Mail Group, about a week before the event date.

Motels About a mile east of the start is a Rodeway Inn and a Travelodge. There are many services near these two. Further west, about a 1.5 miles from the start, are two more economical motels, Day’s Inn and Quality Inn. You will pass them on your way to the start from the interstate.

Registration If possible, please register 48 hours in advance so I have time to prepare the personalized brevet cards and cue sheets.

Support This will be a self-supported brevet. The ride coordinator and/or RBA will be riding with the whole group as a participant. This means you will be getting your supply of fluids and extra food at convenience stores or cafes along the route. There is no SAG. In the event of any catastrophic problems, we recommend that you have a back-up plan (a local friend that you can call for assistance). If you do have a friend or spouse that can provide support, please let me know — such help is always welcome.

If you have to abandon the brevet, please call or text me, so I don’t wait for you at the finish.

Sanctioning See our “What is a Brevet?” page for more information on sanctioning.

Sun Data Civil twilight/sunrise: Twilight: 7:11, Sunrise: 7:39. Sunset: 19:43, Twilight: 20:11

Reminders This is a self-supported event, so bring cash for stops at various convenience stores. Also have a pen in your bag as this route requires answering “Information Checkpoint” questions. The entrance fee for the park is $12 (2014 rate). Sometimes they let several cyclists through on one paid admission.

If You Are Late Please call me so I can arrange to leave you a cue sheet and brevet card. You can start up to an hour after the official start time, but subsequent checkpoint cut-off times will remain the same, as if you had started with everyone else. If you know in advance, or wake up Saturday morning and decide not to ride, please let me know so I won’t worry about you at the start. I will not be checking e-mail on Saturday morning, so please call or text me.
