2011 Heart of Utah 300K
Date & Time Saturday, May 14th, 2011, with a mass start at 6:00 a.m. sharp. Check-in is from 5:00–5:45 a.m., with brief announcements at about 5:50 a.m. This brevet will be held rain or shine.
Introduction This new route, which circumnavigates the center of Utah (the official marker is some 14 miles NW of Ephraim), is a combination of some of my favorite cycling areas in central Utah. This includes the location for the Sanpete Classic Bicycle Race and Fun Ride and a stage of the 2008 Tour of Utah pro race. It travels on rural highways and quiet farm roads. The route starts in the small community of Santaquin, which is about 15 miles south of Provo. It then goes through Goshen and then immediately makes the 2,000-foot climb up to Eureka. The route then drops down into the west desert of Utah as it heads towards Little Sahara Sand Dunes, before it turns east, traveling through Nephi. It then makes another climb (+ 1,237 ft) up Salt Creek Canyon to the north end of Sanpete County, where it goes through the towns of Fountain Green, Wales, Chester and Spring City (enjoy the free and fresh “on tap” spring water at this checkpoint). From Spring City the route proceeds down highway 89 to Gunnison, the southern most point of the ride. The route is designed to hopefully take advantage of the typical afternoon SW winds, as the last long leg proceeds north from Gunnison back to Santaquin.
Route Stats 304.1 km (189.0 miles) with 6705 feet of cumulative elevation gain. Time limit: 20 hrs 16 mins. (by 2:16 a.m. the next morning)
Start & Finish Location Maverik Country Store at 725 East Main St in Santaquin. Please park on the street and NOT in the Maverik parking lot.
Directions From Provo head south on I-15 past Payson and take exit 244. Maverik is just east of the off-ramp.
Registration If possible, please register in advance, so I have time to prepare the brevet cards and cue sheets (& purchase enough food). The fee is $10.00 ($13.00 for day of registration, checks only or exact cash accepted, come 30 minutes early & bring this PDF form filled out). Membership in BCC is not required (contrary to earlier reports). Online registration is available on my cycling gear site using PayPal or VISA/MC payment methods. There are no additional online or Active.com fees. There are no refunds, but if you cancel with 72 hours notice, we can carry forward your fees to another event. If you choose to use snail mail, use this PDF form.
Support I (or a designated helper, should I decide to ride the brevet that day), will be at the start and finish to handle the brevet cards. I will also be at the second checkpoint to provide refills on water & some snacks. This will be at a highway rest stop half way between Eureka and Nephi (mile 32). During the ride I plan to drive the route, and at key checkpoints provide some additional fluids and snacks (and a light lunch midway through the ride at about mile 96 in Spring City). Technically I cannot provide sag support, but I will try to be on hand for any catastrophe’s. I will however need to be at the finish line from approximately 4:00 p.m. on, to sign off on riders as they arrive.
Please note that between mile 127 in Gunnison and mile 166 in Nephi (a 39 mile stretch with big rollers) there are no services open after 9 p.m. At this point of the ride, you may be quite fatigued, so if you are on the route during this time of day, I advise you to stock up on fluids and/or food stuffs before departing Gunnison.
If you have to abandon the brevet, please call me, so I don’t wait for you at the finish.
Reminders This is a self-supported event, so bring cash for stops at various convenience stores. Also have a pen in your bag as this route requires answering an “Informational Checkpoint” question.
Lighting This route purposely starts at dawn (i.e. and not before), so hopefully no lighting will be required in the morning. Many riders will finish after dark however and lighting will be required then. If you haven’t done double-century rides as “all in daylight” events, I highly recommend you have lighting and reflective clothing with you from the start. Although the last 23 miles of this route are on a quiet rural road, it is still not safe to ride at night without lighting (if you arrive at the finish after dark without appropriate lighting and clothing you will be DQed— see our rules page for more info on this topic). There is a possibility I can carry forward a small drop bag with your lighting gear to the half-way lunch stop which is at mile 95 in Spring City.
The civil twilight start & end is 5:39 a.m. & 9:07 p.m. Sunrise/sunset is 6:10 a.m. and 8:36 p.m.

If You Are Late Please call me so I can arrange to leave you a cue sheet and brevet card. You can start up to an hour after the official start time, but subsequent checkpoint cut-off times will remain the same, as if you had started with everyone else. If you know in advance, or wake up Saturday morning and decide not to ride, please let me know so I won’t worry about you at the start. I will not be checking e-mail on Saturday, so please call or text me.
Sanctioning RUSA-sanctioned brevet #1036. This is not an ACP-sanctioned event and consequently is not a qualifier for the 1200k Paris-Brest-Paris (PBP), but it IS a qualifying brevet for domestic 1200ks. See our “What is a Brevet?” page for more information on sanctioning.
Route Info Bike Route Toaster Map. A detailed cue sheet and brevet card will be provided at check in. Do NOT rely on the online cue sheet as it may not be up to date. An accurate cue sheet will be provided at the start.
